Staffing
Welcome to Mrs. Hollie Scadden to Waimakariri 3, it has been a great start to the term. Mrs. Tina Norton will be in W2 on a Thursday and Friday until the appropriate documentation comes through for Hollie from the Education Council. We also welcome Mrs. Shelley Barbour to Waimakariri who will be in on Fridays. Miss Bridget McGrath will have her release days on a Thursday this term. Mrs Tina Norton and Mr. Glen McKenzie will be her release teachers. Mrs Carmen Aldridge will have her release day on a Friday and Mrs. Shelley Barbour will be in on these days. Mathematics Claire Howison has been been catering to the needs of some of our mathematicians during the past two terms by being a fourth teacher in our hub. Her role has changed this term as she is Acting Principal while Ginnie is on sabbatical leave. We welcome Angela Clarke to the team. She will be working with some of Ōtākaro and Waimakariri Hub children from 9 - 10:10 on Mondays - Thursdays. The children have been regrouped for Addition and Subtraction learning for Weeks 1 to 5. In Weeks 6 - 10, the focus will shift to Multiplication and Division. After our testing in Term 2, there are a number of gaps across the hub and we want to ensure we plug these before the end of the year. The strand focus is Geometry, Position and Orientation. The children were pre tested at the end of last term and the children will attend learning labs to develop their skills in this area. Literacy We are implementing a slightly different approach to Literacy this term with a session that integrates both reading and writing teaching and learning. This will be under the umbrella of Inquiry Learning within the context of ‘The 7 Wonders of the World’. We anticipate this being in full swing about Week 3. This week we have been learning about the St Albans Inquiry process as we continue to set a strong foundation of understanding. During for the first two weeks the children will be writing a speech for our bi-annual speech competition. Children have received the rubric and are in the process of writing so they can practise their three minute speech. It is recommended they focus on pace and eye contact along with practising in front of an audience at home as a part of their home fun. Home base finals will be held in week 3. The top two from each home base will then compete on Tuesday 22 August at 10:30 for the Year 5/6 Speech Cup. We are excited that Michael Williams has offered to be our judge for this competition. Sport & Physical Education Children will continue to participate in weekly sport at Hagley and Nunweek Park. This competition recommences Friday 4th August and concludes Friday 25th August. Zone Winter Tournament is scheduled for Monday 7th August with a postponement date on Wednesday 9th August. This involves our current Hagley Sports teams competing against other teams in the North East Zone and is held at South Hagley Park (Hockey could possibly be located elsewhere). Any teams that win the competition will then compete in the Canterbury Winter Tournament held on Thursday 24th August. PE this term will begin with a continuation of invasion games from Term 2, as the weather did not allow for many lessons. When the weather warms up we will move on to athletics as preparation for Term 4 athletics. We will participate in golf sessions (see below). Fitness will include a beep test at the beginning and end of the term with a focus on skipping, shuttles and stations to increase our fitness. Golf in Schools As part of our Term 3 activities we will he having in-school golf lessons. This involves 3 lessons per home base (one per week in Weeks 5-7) culminating in a trip to an actual golf course in Week 8 where all children complete 3 holes. Details of this trip will confirmed closer to the time, however we will require parent transport. Topic This term we are looking at ‘The Seven Wonders of the World’ with an integration of Literacy, Technology, Science, Social Sciences and Digital Technologies. The children will look at inquiring into one of the wonders from the ancient, medieval, or modern wonders of the world. We anticipate this learning being interconnected and fun to build on current understandings to create new deeper understandings. If you have any information at home, books, photos or personal experiences please discuss these with your child to support their learning. Cultural Festival Te Mahuri Kapa Haka have been spending time learning waiata, haka and poi as a part of their performance piece for Cultural Festival. We envisage there will be more practises in the lead up to this event and we support our tamariki as they work hard to present a polished performance on Wednesday 16th August. Please encourage your child to learn their words and actions as much as possible. Home Fun We have used the Sounds Alive spelling programme over the past two terms and we will continue to use this in Term 3. The children were retested at the end of Term 2 to ascertain the level they are working at. Hopefully your child has progressed to a new level. Spelling is also integrated into our Literacy learning with focus on homophones, antonyms, prefix/suffixes and so on. Practising basic facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division is a must, with instant recall being the ultimate goal. Please help your child learn these. Reminders Scholastic book orders are due in Wednesday 9 August. PTA Mufti Day - Thurs 10th August (gold coin or a new non-perishable treat item) School Photo orders are due in Friday 11th August. Term 3 is already shaping up to be an exciting and enriching time. We are still working on a trip/in school event and a Big Day Out activity and there will be more details to come as available. As always; we look forward to seeing you around. Please contact us in person, via email or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Hollie, Bridget and Carmen :) |
