Waimakariri Hub Newsletter - Term 4, 2017
Staffing Welcome to Mrs. Tina Norton to Waimakariri 1, it has been a great start to the term and we are looking forward to spending the term with her. Mrs. Tina Norton is a longstanding reliever who some of the children have had as a teacher before. Mrs. Carmen Aldridge will have her release day on a Friday and Mr Glen McKenzie will be in on these days. Both Hollie and Tina will have release days over the term for the completion of assessment and report writing. Mathematics Angela Clarke continues to be the fourth teacher in the hub for mathematics this term. She will be working with some of TTRR, Ōtākaro and Waimakariri Hub children from 9 - 10:10 on Mondays - Thursdays. The rest of the hub children will focus on extending their Multiplication and Division learning for Weeks 1 to 3. In Weeks 4 - 6 is set aside for assessment being GLoSS, IKAN and PAT Mathematics tests. In Weeks 7 - 8, the focus will shift to Problem Solving and Ratio’s & Proportions. The children have been taught how to do multiplication arrays and these will become part of the Homefun this term. Inquiry This term we are looking at ‘The Brain’ with the big question of ‘How does our brain grow?’ This will include an integration of Literacy, Technology, Science, Te Reo Māori and Digital Technologies. The children will produce a variety of outcomes relating to the brain. We anticipate this learning being interconnected and fun to build on current understandings to create new deeper understandings. If you have any information at home, please discuss this with your child to support their learning. In Week 8 on Wednesday 5th December, 2.15pm till 3.30pm we are going to hold a parent sharing session so you can come in and view what your child has been learning and the learning outcomes they have produced. We anticipate students to be able to share and talk you through their learning. There will be information on the blog for your reference also. Please note that it is our preference and expectation that these outcomes can be completed at school in the time given. However, if a child wants to complete some parts of this at home we encourage this level of commitment and ownership of learning - especially if they have been away from school. Literacy After a successful term of inquiry learning, we have learnt a number of things and we have adapted our literacy programme to reflect this. During the first three weeks the children will be refreshing their explanation writing skills and filling in any learning gaps they may have in preparation for the writing sample as part of our assessment calendar. During Weeks 4 - 6 the children will be required to produce a number of written outcomes in relation to the inquiry. After assessment in Week 7 - 8, the children will write a range of creative narratives. During the first three weeks, the children will have two reading sessions with a teacher each week focussing on reading and understanding a range of texts about the brain. The reading assessments will be a PAT Comprehension test and Running Records for some learners. Sport & Physical Education Athletics practices started last term and will continue until week 3. All children are learning and developing their skills in high jump, long jump, discus, shot put, relays and sprints. Athletics Day is on Wednesday 1 November 2017. Further details will be available closer to the time. Our Physical Education programme this term will consist of tournament type round robin sporting activities. The children will put themselves into teams to decide a colour, mascot, flag, rules and roles. On Wednesday afternoons, the skills of the game will be taught and practised. On Thursday afternoons the tournament games will be held. Camp We are very excited to be working towards our camp at Wainui from Wednesday 13th to Friday 15th December. This is the second last week of school. A huge thanks to Glen McKenzie for the organisation he does in order to see our tamariki have an amazing experience. There will be a number of letters and pieces of information coming home over the next few weeks. Thank you to the parents who offered to help and 16 parents and 3 teachers have been confirmed as the adult supervision for this camp. Once we have received all permission forms we can finalise numbers for travel to let parents know who have offered to take children to and from camp. If your child in not attending camp, please come in and see Carmen or put this in writing to her. It is important that camp numbers are finalised by Friday 27th October (end of Week 2). If your child is not going to camp, they are expected to attend school on those days and will be allocated a classroom to be in probably a Year 3/4 class on Wednesday and Ōtākaro on Thursday and Friday. This may change dependent on numbers of children not attending camp. If they are not attending school you must notify the office as per normal procedures. Beach Ed Beach Ed is happening for our Year 5’s on Thursday 23rd November, leaving school at 9.00am and returning by 3.00pm. Beach Ed is a full day surf safety course delivered at the Waimairi Beach by surf lifeguards. Beach Ed is age-appropriate learning for school year levels 1-8 and is delivered by the surf lifesaving club for groups of between 30 and 100. Beach Ed also covers module 8 of Swimming NZ Kiwi Swim Safe Program. Home Fun We have used the Sounds Alive spelling programme over the past two terms and we will continue to use this in Term 4. The children were retested at the end of Term 3 to ascertain the level they are working at. Hopefully your child has progressed to a new level. Spelling is also integrated into our Literacy learning. Arrays will be part of our Homefun to increase the instant recall of both multiplication and division facts. It is okay for your child to focus on one or two multiplication facts. Please help your child learn these. Reminders Blog - we will endeavour to keep the blog up to date so feel free to check in and see what is going on in the hub. http://waimakariri2017.weebly.com/ Scholastic Book Orders are due Tuesday 31 October 2017.
